UPSC Civil Services (IAS) 2015 Selection Procedure

Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) organizes Civil Services Exam, popularly known as IAS Exam, every year for recruitment to premium designation in Indian Administrative Services. IAS Preliminary Examination 2015 is scheduled to be conduct on 23 August 2015. The notification for the respective exam will be issued by the Commission on 16 May 2015.

This article will highlight the selection procedure of candidates for Indian Administrative Services. It is quite important to have knowledge about the IAS 2015 Selection Procedure as it will help candidates to prepare accordingly.

Basically the selection procedure is completed in two steps:
  • Prelim exam (objective).
  • Main exam (including written test and interview).
  • Candidates will have to qualify both the stages for being selected for the job. Therefore first motive of the candidate is to qualify in preliminary exam and then the main exam. Candidates not able to clear the prelim exam will not be allowed to appear in main exam.
The preliminary exam will be of 200 marks. Each subject will be carrying equal weightage based on the diverse subjects like Aptitude, Reasoning and English. Total time of 4 hours will be given to the candidates to complete the series of multiple choice questions that has been given to them in question paper.
As far as main exam is considered, it will be descriptive in nature, i.e., the solutions of these questions must be given in details. Through main exam, candidates are tested for their understanding levels and intellectual depth.

It is mandatory for them to qualify as per the IAS 2015 Selection Procedure, otherwise they will not be able to get recruited on the civil servant post.

Union Public Service Commission has made some changes in the pattern used for written examination. Candidates will have to attempt 9 (2+7) papers in total. Other important details regarding pattern are:

  • The starting two papers will be qualifying papers. Out of these two, one will be of an Indian language and other paper will be of English language.
  • Rest of the 7 papers will be assessed for merit.
  • Third paper will be an essay paper in which candidates will have to write essay in their choice of language.
  • Paper fourth to paper seventh will be based on general studies which included history, governance, geography, disaster management, international relations, aptitude, etc.
  • Eighth and ninth paper will be optional subjects based on candidate's choice.
The exam will tentatively be conducted on 23 August 2015. They are allowed for six attempts to satisfy all the IAS 2015 Selection Procedure and get selected for being a civil servant. Read More About Civil Services Exams.
